1. Goals

We publish, on average, two audio podcasts each week. Our aim is to have as many hosts on our roster as possible. Our ultimate goal is to podcast live audio and video episodes as many times each week as possible, and have a presence at major Internet venues like Blog Talk Radio. We want this to get big!!!

Before continuing with the details, here’s a list of our current hosts, and links to their work on free will.

2. Hosting and Guests Criteria

Our criteria for hosting our podcast is limited to simply understanding that free will is an illusion. It’s alright if beginning hosts are not familiar with many of the details behind this truth. We’ll learn from each other as we do the podcasts. Our criteria for being a guest is open, and we welcome both believers of free will and those who understand that free will is an illusion.

3. Topics Selection

Hosts are always free to select whatever topic they wish to talk about, or no topic at all, as long as the discussion is related to free will.

4. Balance in Participation

Whether the podcast is hosted by one, or two, or more hosts, we strive to ensure a balance in participation. When, for example the podcast has three hosts, each should ideally talk about one third of the time.

5. Language

We adhere to the language guidelines used by iTunes that will qualify our podcast to be listed there as a general audience podcast. Their criteria, however, is somewhat vague:

“The <itunes:explicit> tag indicates whether your podcast contains explicit material. The two usable values for this tag are “yes” and “clean”.
If you populate this tag with the “yes” value, indicating the presence of explicit content, an “explicit” parental advisory graphic will appear.
If you populate this tag with the “clean” value, indicating that none of your podcast episodes contain explicit language or adult content, a “clean” parental advisory graphic will appear.
If you populate this tag with any other value besides “yes” or “clean,” neither of the parental advisory graphics will appear and that space will remain blank.
Note that podcasts that contain explicit material are not available in some iTunes Store territories.”

6. Podcast Recording Session Scheduling and Upload Date Posting

Again, we hold regularly scheduled podcast recording sessions every Saturday at 7pm ET and Sunday at 2pm ET on SKYPE. If you’d like to join us, fill out the above form, and Chandler or I will contact you through email with the details.

7. Audio Podcast Recording Software Guidelines

Note: Some of what follows, especially about audio and video processing, may seem complicated. New hosts shouldn’t worry about this at all. We who have already hosted podcasts will take care of this for the time being, and eventually, we’ll post screen capture videos with easy step-by-step instructions for new hosts.

Although hosts should feel free to use whatever software works best for them, we recommend the following programs.

A. Communicate through Skype.

B. Record the episodes with the free Mp3 Skype Recorder available here –

http://voipcallrecording.com/MP3_Skype_Recorder

Please be sure to download this software from the company site, rather than any mirror download page. When you first open Mp3 Skype Recorder, Skype will post a notification asking you to allow the program to access Skype. Click “yes.”

C. Trim the ends and volume-adjust the recordings with Audacity audio editor downloaded from

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

See 8F iii and iv for detailed instructions. (again, please download this software from the company site, rather than a mirror download page).

8. Audio Podcast Recording Procedure For Two or More Hosts

A. Open Skype and Mp3 Skype Recorder
(the default setting on the recorder is to open whenever Skype opens. You can change this if you’d like).

B. Begin Conversation, and Add People
If you’re recording the episode with another host, initiate the conversation by calling them through your Skype contacts list. Additional hosts can be included by selecting “Conversation” from the top toolbar, and clicking “Add People.”

C. Adjusting the Podcast Recording Audio Balance
When all hosts are on the call, end the Mp3 Skype Recorder recording (that began by default when you started the call) by pressing “OFF.” Begin a new recording by either ending and beginning a new Skype call (seems to be more reliable) or by pressing “ON” and have each of the hosts say something briefly. End that recording by pressing “OFF” and click the link on the popup that will appear at your bottom right toolbar to listen to the sound test. The volume level for each host should be relatively equal. If one host is too soft or too loud, ask them to adjust their mic setting by;

i) Right-clicking the volume icon on your bottom right toolbar,
ii) Selecting “Recording devices”
iii) Determining which mic you are using by seeing which mic has green level hashmarks
iv) Right-clicking on that mic and selecting “Properties
v) Selecting the “levels” tab in the popup.
vi) Moving the slider right or left to raise or lower the mic recording volume.

It’s very important to be sure Mp3 Skype Recorder is actually “recording” rather than just “monitoring.” You can do this by noticing the “recording message at the bottom left of the Mp3 Skype Recorder box, or more reliably by opening up the “save in” folder for the recording, and noticing that the recording is listed there (it will list 0 kbs until after the recording is done).

D. Moderating and Timing the Podcast
Decide who will moderate the podcast, and as soon as you begin the conversation, activate a timer that will let you know when the 30 minutes duration of the podcast is nearing.

E. Click “OFF” on Mp3 Skype Recorder to end the recording.

F. Trimming and Further Adjusting Sound Level in Audacity

i) Open Audacity, and select “import” and then “audio” from the “file” menu at the top right toolbar.
ii) Select the audio file for the podcast (it should be the last one, and it’s length should be about 30 minutes)
iii) Adjust the volume using this YouTube video as a guide – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKHFHG0frEA
iv) Trim the podcast using this YouTube video as a guide – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1U971TE6qo

Note: To address a glitch in Windows Movie Maker that cuts off the last 10 or so seconds from the audio of the video will create for uploading to YouTube, use this following procedure:

a) In Audacity, trim from about 3 seconds after the voices on the podcast end to the end of the audio file.
b) Then select from where the voices end to the end of that 3-second segment, click “Generate” from the top tool bar, and select “Silence” from the drop down menu. This will give you 3 seconds of silence after your voices end on the podcast, and the Movie Maker glitch.

v) From the “Edit” menu item on the top toolbar, hover down and “Select,” and then click “All.”
vi) From the “File” menu item on the top toolbar, hover down and click “Export Selected Audio.”
vii) At that point, simply choose a file name that includes the date and hosts (e.g. 032115 Chandler ‘Trick) and save the file (Save as Type) as an Mp3. If you do more than one podcast on that day, simply include the podcast number after the date. i.e. “1,” “2.”
viii) Before you save, click the “Options” button below the “Save” button, and make sure “Constant Bit Rate” is checked.
iv) Click “Save” and your clipped podcast will take about a minute to process and save.
Instructions for creating the video in Window Movie Maker to come soon!
